Koç University (KU)

Koç University (KU) is an endowed, non-profit institution of higher education, located in Istanbul, Turkey, founded in 1993 by the Vehbi Koç Foundation. Currently, Koç University is ranked among the top three universities in Turkey in terms of the number of international research publications per faculty member per year, based on publications in peer- reviewed journals listed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). Koç University maintains strong relations with the leading foreign academic and research centres. The University has entered into 125 cooperation agreements with high-status universities around the world. Role in project

Koç University and the Social Policy Center will contribute to (through their expertise in social studies of technologies) policy analysis and advocacy. Particularly, KU will engage actively in tasks related to mapping of stakeholders and types of emergencies; analysis of the state-of-the-art in decision support systems for emergencies; identification of user needs and interoperability requirements and collection and analysis of data regarding best-practices, guidelines and policies, at local, national, international levels, for health services in emergencies; analysis and reporting of cases and pilots. Koç University will also participate in dissemination activities.


Lemi Baruh

Project Coordination at Koç University

Lemi Baruh, (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania, Annenberg School for Communication, 2007) is Assistant Professor and Department Chair at the Department of Media and Visual Arts, College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Koç University in Turkey. Lemi Baruh’s research interests include new media technologies, social psychology and media policy. A sustaining member of the International Communication Association, Lemi Baruh is an associate editor of International Journal of Interactive Communication Systems and Technologies and an editorial board member of the Journal of Communication.

Haluk Mert Bal

Policy Research and Data Analysis

Haluk Mert Bal is a doctoral researcher at the Design, Technology, and Society program at Koç University. He completed a B.A. in Philosophy and B.S. in Sociology at Middle East Technical University (METU). He received his M.Sc. degree of Social Policy from METU in 2013. His thesis focused on disability and digital inequality. Currently, he studies the role of new media technologies and local engagement projects in social movements. His interests also include political economy of media, citizen journalism, emergency reporting, media policy and science and technology studies.

Zeynep Günel

Design and Data Visualization

Zeynep Günel is a doctoral researcher at the Design, Technology, and Society program at Koç University. She received her B.A. degree in Industrial Product Design from Istanbul Technical University and M.A. in Visual Communication Design from Sabancı University. She is a Ph.D. Currently, her research interests involve social movements, interaction and information visualization.
