The European Court of Auditors will publish an audit report on EU’s Civil protection Mechanism

Created on Friday, 13 January 2017

On 11 January, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) published a press release. ECA mentioned that on 18 January it will publish a special report entitled "Union Civil Protection Mechanism: the coordination of responses to disasters outside the EU has been broadly effective" in 23 EU languages.

The auditors examined the ways in which the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism provides coordinated responses to disasters worldwide. The Mechanism was first established in 2001; Its main objectives are strengthening cooperation between the EU and participating countries and facilitating coordination in the field of civil protection to improve the effectiveness of systems for preventing, preparing for and responding to disasters. The auditors further examined three recent international incidents for which the Mechanism had been activated: the 2014 floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, and the Nepal earthquake in 2015.

The report will identify the coordination of the EU’s emergency response to natural disasters and disease outbreaks on a worldwide scale and mention areas of improvement.
