Introduction
The burgeoning deployment of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in emergency medical care has brought about important questions about their contribution to emergency response capabilities of organizations during medical emergencies and disasters. On the one hand, it is generally expected that utilization of ICTs will improve communication and coordination among emergency medical services personnel and emergency departments of hospitals, as well as other stakeholders, such as law enforcement personnel and volunteers, involved in emergency response efforts. Similarly, ICTs have the potential to enhance situational awareness and resource allocation by assisting emergency response organizations in discerning the “current” requirements of a given emergency context and making projections about how a situation will progress. On the other hand, issues related to usability, standardization, and interoperability remain as important obstacles against the widespread adoption of ICTs in emergency medical care. Additionally, utilization of ICTs in emergency medical care raises issues pertaining to protection of patient privacy, managing caregiver liability, and legal compliance across borders.

Objective
In this light, this special issue seeks contributions regarding the emerging use of ICT-based tools in emergency medical care. Researchers are invited to submit contributions that illustrate novel methods and approaches, research papers, field/case reports, and/or critical evaluation of implications of utilization of ICTs for emergency medical care.

Recommended Topics
Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Design features and user interfaces of ICTs in emergency medical care
  • Role of ICTs on field management
  • Factors affecting the adoption of ICTs in emergency medical care
  • Interoperability of ICT tools in large scale, cross-border emergencies
  • Use of ICTs for fostering volunteer engagement and management
  • Use of ICTs in emergency staff training and evaluation
  • Use of ICTs for support in collaborative decision making
  • Design and implementation of semantic management tools and decision support systems in emergency medical care
  • Role of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies on emergency medical field management
  • Big data and machine learning systems in emergency medical care
  • Ethical and legal issues related to utilization of ICTs in emergency medical care
  • Security of new ICT tools and their applications in emergency medical care
